Background of the study
This study investigates the influence of media on the preservation of the Yoruba language in the context of political debates. In Yoruba communities, media serves as a critical platform for political discourse and language maintenance. Political debates broadcast on television, radio, and digital platforms not only disseminate information but also reinforce cultural language norms through the use of Yoruba (Adebayo, 2023). Media outlets often highlight linguistic features that resonate with local traditions and values, thus playing a dual role of informing the public and preserving linguistic heritage. The study examines political debate programs, analyzing both the linguistic content and the presentation style of Yoruba language used by politicians and moderators. It utilizes content analysis, interviews with media professionals, and audience surveys to determine the extent to which media representations contribute to language preservation. The research further considers how the interplay between modern communication techniques and traditional language usage influences public perception and political engagement.
Statement of the problem
Despite the media’s potential to preserve Yoruba language during political debates, inconsistencies in language usage and editorial bias have been observed (Adebayo, 2023). In some instances, political debates on media platforms favor code-switching or the use of simplified language, which may undermine the richness of Yoruba. This inconsistency poses a challenge to maintaining the language’s integrity and cultural depth. The study seeks to identify how media practices impact Yoruba language preservation and to determine whether current debate formats support or hinder linguistic continuity.
Objectives of the study:
To assess media practices in presenting Yoruba during political debates.
To identify factors that affect language preservation in media contexts.
To recommend strategies for enhancing Yoruba language use in political broadcasts.
Research questions:
How is Yoruba used in media political debates?
What factors contribute to the erosion or preservation of the language?
What measures can improve Yoruba language representation in media?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the role of media in maintaining Yoruba language heritage amid political debates. The findings will aid media professionals, political communicators, and cultural institutions in developing practices that reinforce linguistic integrity and promote cultural preservation (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Yoruba language use in political debates on media platforms in Yoruba communities; excludes non-political media content.
Definitions of terms:
Media influence: The effect of media on public discourse and cultural practices.
Language preservation: Efforts to maintain and sustain a language.
Political debate: A formal discussion of political issues.
